Do you need to register a motorboat?

Boating with a motorboat is a great pleasure, relaxation, and a significant dose of excitement. It's no surprise that the number of enthusiasts engaging in this type of recreation is growing. Especially since no licenses are required to operate small vessels. This means that almost anyone can try their hand and see if boating with an internal combustion engine is an attractive way to spend their time.

What licenses are needed to operate a motorboat?

As previously mentioned, small motorboats can be operated without a license. Specifically, this refers to vessels with an engine power below 10 kW, but also those with a power of 75 kW, with a hull length up to 13 meters, provided they can reach a maximum speed of up to 15 km/h. To operate all other motorboats, obtaining a license is necessary. The Polish Motorboat and Water Skiing Association is authorized to issue it.

When is motorboat registration necessary?

Purchasing a motorboat is always a significant event and a great joy. However, before we start enjoying the pleasures of boating, formalities must be completed. It may turn out that the boat is subject to registration with the Polish Motorboat and Water Skiing Association. The Inland Navigation Act requires owners of motorboats with a hull length over 12m, or with an engine power higher than 15 kW, to make a registration entry. This applies to vessels intended for sports and recreation. All other boats, with a shorter length or lower engine power, do not need to be registered, but it can be done if desired. We have 30 days from the purchase of the vessel, its construction, or arrival from abroad to complete the formalities. The application, along with a complete set of documents, can be submitted in person or sent by mail, which facilitates the entire procedure.

Although handling formalities is the least pleasant stage associated with purchasing a boat, it can certainly be said that it's worth it, as owning a motorboat compensates for all inconveniences.
