Gyroscopic stabilizers on motorboats

Those of you who have had the opportunity to sail a yacht more frequently might have come across the term: gyroscopic stabilizer. It is a piece of equipment used to stabilize the boat – as the name suggests, the stabilizer reduces the ship's rolling. Its application significantly improves the safety and comfort of navigating the vessel.

How does a stabilizer work on a boat?

The operation of a gyroscopic stabilizer utilizes the symmetrical properties of rotating bodies, which tilt around their axis. A spinning gyroscope counteracts the tilting of the boat – both those in motion on the water and anchored vessels. No elements of the boat stabilizer protrude underwater outside the ship's hull, which is undoubtedly an advantage compared to alternative technical solutions with similar functions. The gyroscopic stabilizer does not consume much electrical energy, is easy to install, and does not require special maintenance. Thanks to the availability of various stabilizer models on the market, it is easy to choose one that matches the load capacity of a given boat. If the vessel is large, it is worth considering purchasing and installing several good stabilizers.

Is it worth buying a gyroscope?

Definitely yes. While sailboats have an adequate level of stabilization thanks to sails and the keel and centerboard, a motorboat lacks such safeguards, so when sailing it, we are exposed to uncomfortable rolling. This also applies to passenger and cruise yachts. Sailing with gyroscopic stabilizers is simply more comfortable and safer. Among other solutions reducing rolling found on boats today are also, for example, active stabilizing tanks and fin stabilizers.

Where to buy a boat stabilizer?

A gyroscopic stabilizer can usually be purchased from motorboat distributors, who, in addition to the vessels themselves, also offer equipment and accessories for them.
