The popularity of water sports is continually increasing. It's no surprise, as being in nature, especially on the water, is incredibly relaxing and provides an excellent escape from everyday life. Consequently, more and more people are choosing to drive motorboats. No permits are needed to operate small vessels. Licenses are required when we want to operate larger yachts. However, can such vessels be used on any body of water?
As a rule, boats with motor engines can navigate inland waterways, but also other bodies of water, such as lakes. Operating them does not require obtaining permissions, so it can be assumed that they are open and accessible to everyone. The limitation is the necessity of having a license in the case of larger boats with internal combustion engines. It is also essential to know and strictly follow the regulations concerning navigation on inland waterways, for the safety of oneself and other water traffic participants. An example of the most frequently violated regulation is the prohibition of creating waves. These restrictions are most commonly applied in ports and on rivers. Their purpose is to ensure the safety of moored vessels and people paddling, for example, kayaks.
Although regulations generally allow operating boats with internal combustion engines on almost all bodies of water, there are certain restrictions. The most important of these are the so-called quiet zones. County councils have the authority to establish them. The purpose of such zones is to limit the impact of noise on the ecosystem. The ban includes emitting noise in the established zone above 45 dB. This means a prohibition on operating motorboats on bodies of water within the quiet zone. Therefore, it is always worth checking whether the body of water you intend to use is subject to this restriction.
Although inland waterways are generally accessible, before setting out, you should always check the water conditions. Sometimes their low level makes it impossible to safely navigate a boat. And safety on the water should always be a priority.
