Yacht malfunction - how to react?

Enthusiasts of recreational sailing on inland waters and the sea use various vessels depending on their preferences and the nature of the planned voyage. Fast and extremely efficient motorboats are popular among many, as they can reach significant speeds and provide much enjoyment to dedicated motorboat enthusiasts. An alternative is yacht cruises, which are often much longer, with routes far from the shoreline. In such conditions, any serious malfunction can become a significant problem. Let's find out how to behave in such situations.

What malfunctions can occur on a yacht?

Malfunctions occurring at sea or on a lake are not only troublesome but often dangerous, depending on which parts of the vessel they affect. The most serious are situations where the vessel's buoyancy is threatened, and there is a real risk of sinking. Equally dangerous are damages that limit or eliminate maneuverability, such as the loss of the rudder. Defects in navigation equipment are concerning because they affect the ability to determine one's position—even on longer voyages, dead reckoning navigation is no longer standard due to the availability of inexpensive and efficient electronics. Damage to radio communication devices or the inability to power equipment, including navigation lights, will also be cause for concern.

What can be done in case of a malfunction?

The course of action in the event of a malfunction depends on its nature and the prevailing weather conditions, as well as the yacht's position. In extreme cases, it may be necessary to use rescue equipment and abandon a vessel that has lost buoyancy or is adrift. More often, it involves calling for help using radio or flares. However, most minor issues can usually be handled independently with the right experience and good equipment.
